The Lion Foundation Youth Enterprise Scheme (www.yetrust.co.nz/) provides Top of the South Secondary school students in year 12 and 13 the opportunity to learn about the business world. Students set up a company, create real products or services and make real profit or loss.
OPPORTUNITIES
During the year the students, with their teachers and with help from local business mentors, will learn about leadership, business planning, production, marketing and finance. Teamwork and community spirit are other components for this great ‘real life’ business experience. NCEA achievement credits can be achieved through school, and a genuine business opportunity can be created.
The YES Year for 2012:
Note that some of the dates are tentative dates and need to be checked with the individual participating schools
Term 1-Enterprise Day: (revised date) Thursday March 15th. 2012 at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology(NMIT) in Nelson.
The programme starts with the regional “Enterprise-day” This is where students come together to brainstorm concepts and test these out with local business people.One of the objectives is to be ‘matched’ with a local business mentor and the introduction of the regional coordinator.
Term 2 – YES Dragon’s Den: NEW DATE: Wednesday May 30th. 2012, from 4PM at the Theater Royal, Nelson.
This is about producing a business plan and participate in the Oral Presentations; The YES Dragon’s Den. Pitching products to a team of judges (Dragons) made up of investors and business people to endeavour acquiring investment to develop the new business. Each of the ‘Dragons’ will have at least $500 in front of them to ‘invest’(no strings attached)
Term 3 – Trade Fair: Tentative date Saturday 25th. August 2012
By now the products / services are well developed and ready to be tested for selling. The regional Trade Fair provides an opportunity to all teams to sell to the wider public at the Nelson Saturday Market.
Term 4 -Regional Awards: Tentative date; October 26th. 2012
Capturing the success and learning of the year with a celebration and rewards for performance, dedication and persistence.
